Technical Director

Description

We’re looking for a Technical Director to join our client’s team and architect the narrative physics engine – the core system behind a new category of narrative-driven RPGs.

This is a rare, career-defining opportunity for someone who combines deep technical expertise with a strong passion for storytelling in games. You’ll collaborate directly with the company’s founder, helping to shape the AI foundations that will redefine how stories are created and experienced.

If you’re a systems thinker, a Unity expert, and you love RPGs, this role is for you.

This position is open to candidates based in Europe.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the technical execution of the game, overseeing its architecture, tools, and performance.
  • Mentor and guide a team of talented engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and innovation.
  • Split your time between hands-on coding (70%) and team management (30%).
  • Develop game-aware features and enhance game mechanics.
  • Define and maintain the architectural and technical vision of the project.
  • Support future team growth as needed.
  • Collaborate primarily within European time zones, with occasional overlap with the founder (PST).
  • Oversee code quality, documentation, and adherence to software engineering best practices.

REQUIREMENTS

  • 8+ years of professional experience, ideally on RPG or narrative-focused titles.
  • 4+ years of experience leading teams and delivering the technical vision of a project.
  • Genuine passion for narrative RPGs and a strong understanding of what makes them engaging.
  • Ability to design and code systems that directly improve gameplay and narrative quality.
  • Solid experience with Unity (preferred) or Unreal.
  • Proven leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills; capable of inspiring and managing high-performing teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset to tackle complex technical challenges.
  • Experience growing and scaling technical teams within game development.
  • Highly independent and comfortable working with minimal supervision.

WHAT THEY OFFER

  • A “once in a career” role shaping the foundation of a new type of game engine
  • Security and stability in a startup backed by strong funding
  • Stock option package
  • Fully remote setup with flexible working hours
  • Work directly with a CTO founder on architecture and design
  • Work in a small, 15-person team where your contributions truly matter
