Lead VFX Artist

Inferno Studios is seeking a highly experienced and inspiring Lead VFX Artist to join its team in a brand-new role.

As Lead VFX Artist, you will be responsible for maintaining the creative and technical excellence of our VFX output across all projects, while supporting, mentoring and guiding the VFX team. You will work closely with the Managing Director and project partners, helping shape artistic direction, workflows and the future capabilities of the studio.
This role is fully remote but our ideal candidate would be based either in the UK or Netherlands.

Responsibilities:

Project & Creative Leadership
  • Lead the creation of high-quality, optimised real-time VFX across a range of projects with varying technical and artistic requirements.
  • Maintain a consistently high bar for visual quality and performance across all VFX deliverables.
  • Provide hands-on artistic and technical guidance to support project teams.
  • Assist production with task estimation, prioritisation and planning across VFX tasks.
  • Attend partner and stakeholder calls where required, representing Inferno’s VFX expertise and ensuring alignment with project goals.

Team Leadership & Line Management
  • Act as a line manager for VFX artists, supporting performance, wellbeing and professional development across the team.
  • Mentor and coach team members through regular feedback, reviews and knowledge sharing.
  • Support team growth by identifying skill gaps and helping shape training and development opportunities.
  • Assist in maintaining clear expectations around quality, workflows and best practices.

Recruitment Support
  • Support the recruitment process for VFX roles, including reviewing portfolios, participating in interviews and assisting with candidate assessment when required.
  • Contribute to onboarding new team members and helping them integrate into Inferno’s workflows and culture.
  • Collaborate with the Managing Director on resourcing needs and team structure planning.

R&D + Future Technologies
  • Work closely with the R&D team to research, test and develop new tools, workflows and real-time VFX techniques.
  • Contribute to forward-looking discussions around emerging technology, pipelines and future studio capabilities.
  • Help translate R&D findings into practical workflows that benefit live projects and team efficiency.

Requirements:
  • 10+ years of professional experience in the games and/or film industry, with a minimum of 5 years specialising in real-time VFX pipelines – ideally with shipped real-time projects.
  • Proven experience in a senior or lead VFX role, with responsibility for quality and team support.
  • Strong leadership, communication and mentoring skills in a collaborative, remote environment.
  • Exceptional understanding of real-time VFX principles, optimisation and performance constraints.
  • Advanced knowledge of Unreal Engine and modern real-time workflows.
  • Proficiency with tools such as Houdini, Blender, EmberGen, UE5, Niagra and related VFX software.
  • Strong artistic fundamentals, including timing, colour, composition and readability. A problem-solving mindset with the ability to balance creative ambition and technical constraints.
  • A strong portfolio showcasing your expertise in real-time VFX creation.
  • An interest in emerging real-time technologies and experimental workflows.

Desirable Skills:
  • Experience contributing to or shaping VFX pipelines and studio workflows.
  • Experience mentoring or managing multiple artists across projects.
  • Familiarity with Unity and proprietary engines.
  • 2D VFX or 2D animation experience.
  • Previous line management experience.
  • Experience contributing to recruitment and onboarding processes.
